Gold that women increasingly don't even wear and they place them in the safe-deposit in the banks. At least if they had deposited that money in the banks, that can be loaned out and can generate the multipliers ...
Yes, every which way, we are so disconnected from how the stuff we consume are made and, thus, we can conveniently remain ignorant of environmental problems, labor problems, animal cruelty, ... :(Sriram Khéhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06724218458246880137noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27946614.post-86683474966938186242015-08-21T20:36:46.728-07:002015-08-21T20:36:46.728-07:00One of the consequences of consumption being far r...One of the consequences of consumption being far removed from production, is that the consumer does not really see and appreciate the consequences of production. Before man evolved into a collective trading society, each man or woman simply produced what he or she consumed. You hunted for yourself You grew crops for yourself, etc etc. Wht happened during production was very visible. If you were squeamish about killing an animal to eat it, you didn't.

When production has been so distanced from consumption, as today, we do not see what goes on in production. If we did, we wouldn't consume half the things we do today. You have written many a time about the treatment of animals raised for food. Gold is another such example. Gold might not appeal to you - but its a store of value incomparable to any else. That's why Rajalakshmi craves for it. If she saw the cyanide personally, maybe she might stop hoarding it.Rameshhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11782192840421019943noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27946614.post-632848190824211492015-08-19T09:34:25.380-07:002015-08-19T09:34:25.380-07:00Mining is one of the most destructive economic act...Mining is one of the most destructive economic activities. Opening up the earth's surface is like Pandaora opening that box that she was instructed not to open! Problems ensue.
At least when digging for coal or oil, we can convince ourselves that it is to meet the energy needs. But gold? It is darn useless. And, mining for gold is one of the worst mining activities. Even coal mining is better for the environment ;)
In case you have forgotten, let me remind you about this one, which was only the second worst after Chernobyl, and it was also one that involved gold mining and cyanide: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2000_Baia_Mare_cyanide_spillSriram Khéhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06724218458246880137noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27946614.post-18782902106158136202015-08-18T20:42:59.048-07:002015-08-18T20:42:59.048-07:00Why isn't gold $10,000/ounce? I think very few people know anything of what you wrote.Anne in Salemnoreply@blogger.com
